The animatic allowed us to see the jigsaw puzzle of the day, and navigate all the camera positions (including a lengthy lock-off shot for the wides of the car where you see all the characters at the same time). "With a 42 shot list and a 12 hour day (a COVID test delayed Dave’s arrival to 11am the morning of the shoot), that iPhone animatic became our life saver. I was hoping this would also show me where I could drop some shots in my horrendously long shot list… I couldn’t. So much so that I had filmed the entirety of the video on an iPhone with two actor friends, Josh Glanc and Luke Rollason, a few days before the shoot. The construct of the film had to be water tight. "This is a narrative video with lip-sync.

"After showing some key references, such as BBC children’s TV show Big Babies to reassure the label and band that this was not going to become a dark, Chris Cunningham/Aphex Twin monster, but instead be tone of extreme playfulness and fun, the project was green lit. But then it became apparent how well this fit with the duality of the song’s lyrical content this video could now be seen equally as the relationship between four different people but also a communication between different parts of the same person. "I wrote a draft of the script where Dave played all the characters, purely to be production-friendly. I filmed the entirety of the video on an iPhone with two actor friends a few days before the shoot. But a car is a confined space (COVID), and the budget was tight for this very ambitious idea. I don’t think I would have naturally drawn the conclusion of Dave playing all the characters - after all, Glass Animals has three other band members.

It’s amazing how restrictions can often lead to really exciting developments. A kind of combination of the film Night On Earth (1991) and the board game The Game Of Life. The script was based entirely in a car where the cycle of a lifespan occurred over the length of the film. "I had been nurturing a short film script for the past year or so. Dave then stated that it was also a reflection the relationship that he has with himself. It is good to see the band being so active after such a period of distress."When talking with Dave (Bayley) about the concept for his lyrical content, my initial assumption was that the lyrics were about an argument with a partner.

Seaward, who suffered extensive brain damage, had to relearn how to ‘walk, talk, and drum again’. It was created after a period of intense trauma for the band, due to the fact that drummer Joe Seaward was hit by a truck in Dublin and nearly died. Glass Animal’s Dreamland was a sleekly produced introspective album, that saw the band writing about personal experiences more than before. Incidentally, Tangerine and Hotline Bling both have that Timmy Thomas Why Can’t We Live Together backing beat that gives both songs a foot-tapping vibe. Back in April she teamed up with the Oxford band’s frontman Dave Bayley to deliver a cover of Drake’s hit single Hotline Bling. This is not the first time Parks has collaborated with Glass Animals. In her signature soft vocals she sings wistfully about missing a past love: I wanna see you blooming like a tulip with your hair dyed peach… I used to know the way you smiled// And how you liked your tea// Now your spirited away… I miss that sweet little tangerine. Park’s verse on Tangerine gives the track a more varied and melancholy feel. The presence of special guests Arlo Parks and Denzel Curry, the latter of whom features on the album in song Tokyo Drifting, made the live-stream even more exciting. The event was, however, enhanced by elaborate sets and visuals -each designed to reflect one of their three EPs. The band wanted to promote their new album and unfortunately had to do so with a virtual performance due to obvious reasons. The livestream show, that took place on Friday, was titled Glass Animals: Live In The Internet. Love you boys go smash the link in my bio to listenĪ post shared by Arlo Parks on at 9:58am PDT My sweet boys asked me to hop onto their timeless banger “Tangerine” off their album “Dreamland”! It was a pleasure to be a feature and have a boogie on stage with them for their livestream.
